Healthcare

Last updated:

Ayamonte has a public health centre for primary care, extended in 2024 with ten additional consulting rooms. Hospital care is provided through Hospital Infanta Elena in Huelva, the reference hospital for the Ayamonte health zone in the Huelva-Costa district, about 52 km away. A new high-resolution specialist hospital for the western coast of Huelva, at Lepe, is intended to serve more than 92,000 residents across Ayamonte, Lepe, Cartaya, Isla Cristina and neighbouring municipalities, with an emergency department, day surgery, imaging and outpatient specialist clinics. The building is complete and the opening has been reported as expected during 2026, pending final connections and access works.

Opening dates for public infrastructure move; we will update this page when it opens and we can describe what it actually offers.

For private care, Hospital Quirónsalud Huelva has 42 specialities, is the only private hospital in the province with a neonatal intensive care unit, and holds agreements with international insurers. (Source: Quirónsalud (opens in a new tab).)

How international residents get cover

EU, EEA and Swiss pensioners whose healthcare remains the responsibility of another European country can request an S1 form from their home institution and register it in Spain, after which they are treated on the same terms as someone insured in Spain. (Source: Your Europe, European Commission (opens in a new tab).)

The EHIC is not the route for a permanent move: it covers medically necessary treatment during temporary stays. This is one of the most common misunderstandings among people moving abroad.

Non-lucrative residence holders need qualifying public or private health insurance with an insurer authorised in Spain (Ministerio de Inclusión (opens in a new tab)). Check the detailed requirements published by your Spanish consulate before you apply.

Private premiums depend on age, family composition, pre-existing conditions and level of cover, so ask insurers for quotes for your own profile.
